Some time ago, I began a book on the Thoth Tarot. I did a lot of research on it, discovered many things.
One of the things I discovered I will reveal here now, as it is a point worth making.
Also, this is my last posting to this blog. The character Jess Karlin is no longer alive to finish the work. His creator or manager will do so.
The point I wish to make is this, and it is something of the nature of Tarot, being so immune to factual inquiry as it is, that this point may only now be made for this first time.
But here it is: if you want the designer notes for Thoth Tarot, you hold them in your hands when you read Crowley's book for the deck, "The Book of Thoth". For these are simply the revised notes supplied to Frieda Harris, to assist her in her work on the deck. The notion many writers have had, and which chiefly has been perpetrated by hacks like Mary K. Greer, that Aleister Crowley barely worked on his own Tarot, except for supplying a few suggestions to Harris, is thus demonstrably disproven.
Not only did Crowley work very hard to make sure Harris knew what to paint, and that she have a clear understanding (not always successfully achieved) of what she was painting, but she of course begged Crowley to collect these notes, add to them commentaries that would further elucidate the cards, to be put into a book that would make sense of the Tarot images they had created. Harris well understood, in contradiction to the view that just anybody can insightfully approach and understand Thoth Tarot in a personal way without study, that the images were only superficial representations, without coherent content and linkages unless this would be supplied by Crowley's complex occult dogma.
Suggestion: STOP feeling for a while. START thinking. Don't worry, you will not be able to stop feeling. It comes and floods too naturally, but channeling your feelings along lines of thought, and especially educated thought, is going to move you along your path to understanding a lot better than expecting the Jungian Archetypes to magically inform you about the deck.
So, finally, the book will happen, someday. It will not be written by Jess Karlin, but by his creator, Glenn Wright.
No doubt you will hear about it.
Good luck in your studies.
Glenn Wright
